Attention all crews! The spatial-orientation system is malfunctioning. Sensors send conflicting data, causing dizziness and balance loss. We must diagnose and recalibrate the sensory network.
Work order: Determine the nature and source. Clarify sensations—spinning, unsteadiness, near-faint, fog. Identify triggers such as head turns, standing up, body position. Correlate with symptoms like nausea, hearing changes, headache. Vestibular, central, and other causes require different strategies.
Work order: Maintain safety when dizziness strikes. Sit or lie down at the first sign. Fix gaze on a stationary object; avoid closing eyes, which can worsen vertigo. Keep movements slow. Secure support when walking.
Work order: Restore equilibrium organ function. For BPPV, perform repositioning maneuvers to return otoliths. Use vestibular exercises to retrain the system. Gradually expose yourself to provoking motions. Practice balance drills.
Work order: Address non-vestibular contributors. Check blood pressure; hypotension causes dizziness upon standing. Rule out anemia, hypoglycemia, dehydration. Evaluate the cervical spine for blood-flow effects. Review medications; many induce dizziness.
Work order: Help the brain adapt to sensor changes. Conduct vestibular rehabilitation to teach the brain new patterns. Repeat exercises regularly so neural compensation occurs. Enhance proprioception—the sense of body position. Strengthen leg muscles for better stabilization.
With sensor recalibration and compensatory training, dizziness diminishes or resolves. The vestibular system adapts well. Sudden severe dizziness plus neurologic symptoms demands immediate care. Chronic dizziness warrants evaluation by an otoneurologist.
Dizziness is a disorienting sensation where your brain struggles to integrate conflicting signals from your vestibular system (inner ear), visual system, and proprioceptive sensors in muscles and joints.
