Lactose intolerance occurs when your small intestine produces insufficient lactase enzyme to break down lactose (milk sugar) into absorbable glucose and galactose. Undigested lactose travels to your colon where bacteria ferment it, producing gas, bloating, cramps, and diarrhea.
