Social media platforms are designed around variable rewards and social feedback, which can lead to compulsive use patterns resembling other behavioural addictions. Several brain systems are involved: reward circuits, self‑control networks, threat detection and circadian regulation.
The ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens release dopamine in response to likes, comments and new content. Most of the signal encodes anticipation rather than pleasure, driving repeated checking. Variable reinforcement schedules (sometimes there is something exciting, sometimes not) strongly potentiate this system.

Lack of expected feedback (few likes, no messages) can activate these systems similarly to physical pain, pushing the person back into the apps in search of reassurance.
Positive online interactions can trigger oxytocin and subjective warmth, but usually weaker than in offline contact. This partial satisfaction encourages more frequent digital "doses" without fully meeting the need for connection.

Not every heavy use is an addiction. Concerning signs include loss of control, use despite clear harm, withdrawal‑like discomfort without access, and prioritising online activity over relationships, work or health. Understanding social media addiction as an interaction of reward, control and social systems helps shift the narrative from "weakness" to a modifiable pattern. With structured changes and support, neural circuits can be retuned toward healthier digital behaviour.
