Workaholism is more than just working long hours. It involves an inner compulsion to work, difficulty disengaging, and using work to regulate self‑esteem and emotions. Several biological and psychological systems are involved: stress regulation, reward, and self‑schema.
Chronic overwork activates the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, increasing cortisol and other stress mediators. In the short term this supports alertness and performance; over time it contributes to sleep problems, immune changes, cardiovascular strain and fatigue.
When rest is devalued, natural recovery cycles are disrupted. The organism lives in a prolonged "mobilisation" mode, where the absence of work feels unsafe or empty.
Workaholism often ties self‑worth to productivity. Dopamine‑mediated reward circuits respond to achievements, praise and completed tasks. If other sources of meaning and connection are neglected, the brain may increasingly rely on work‑related reward, reinforcing the cycle.
At the same time, perfectionistic standards and fear of failure can keep the person in a state of internal pressure, where "enough" is never reached.
Social and cultural messages that idealise constant busyness can support workaholic patterns. The self‑schema narrows: "I am what I achieve". Other roles — friend, parent, partner, simply a person — fade into the background.
This narrowing makes any threat to work (illness, job change, retirement) feel like a threat to existence itself, increasing anxiety and resistance to change.
Workaholism is associated with burnout, depression, anxiety, marital difficulties and physical health problems. Helpful interventions may include:
Seeing workaholism as an interaction of stress biology, reward and identity helps shift the focus from "просто трудолюбие" to a pattern that can and should be adjusted in the interest of long‑term health.
