Work order: Secure full recharge overnight. Extend sleep to 7–9 hours—most people are underslept. Improve quality with darkness, cool temperatures, and quiet. Keep a consistent schedule, waking at the same time daily. Address apnea; without deep sleep, duration alone doesn’t matter.

Daytime sleepiness (excessive somnolence) occurs when the brain's arousal systems fail to maintain adequate wakefulness during appropriate hours. This can result from insufficient sleep duration, poor sleep quality, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep disorders (apnea, narcolepsy), medications, or medical conditions. The locus coeruleus (which releases norepinephrine for alertness) and histaminergic neurons (which promote wakefulness) show reduced activity.
