Circadian rhythms may be disrupted by irregular schedules, light exposure, or physiological factors. The sympathetic nervous system stays engaged when the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) system should dominate. The "organism as a team" perspective helps by understanding that your team is stuck in high-alert mode when it needs to power down. Your nervous system, hormonal systems, and brain networks are all communicating "stay awake" when you need rest.
