Fatigue involves persistent exhaustion unrelieved by rest, arising from multiple potential systems: inadequate cellular energy production, chronic inflammation, neurotransmitter depletion, or disrupted sleep architecture. Your mitochondria produce ATP (cellular energy) through complex metabolic pathways requiring oxygen, nutrients (B vitamins, iron, CoQ10, magnesium), and healthy mitochondrial membranes. When any component is deficient, ATP production falters. Chronic inflammation (from infection, autoimmune conditions, or metabolic dysfunction) elevates cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF-alpha) that signal your brain to induce 'sickness behavior'—conserving energy for immune function. Your hypothalamus receives these signals and reduces motivation and energy through altered dopamine and serotonin.
