Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland produces insufficient thyroid hormones (T4 and T3), slowing metabolism throughout your body. Your hypothalamus releases TRH, stimulating your pituitary to release TSH, which signals your thyroid to produce hormones. In primary hypothyroidism (most common), your thyroid itself is damaged—often by autoimmune attack (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) where your immune system produces antibodies against thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin, destroying thyroid tissue. Thyroid hormones affect nearly every cell: they enter nuclei and regulate gene expression controlling metabolism, protein synthesis, and growth.
