Interrupted sleep (sleep fragmentation) occurs when the normal progression through sleep stages is disrupted by brief awakenings, preventing restorative deep sleep and REM sleep. Causes include sleep apnea (breathing interruptions), pain, bladder fullness, environmental disturbances, anxiety, or neurological factors. Each awakening triggers partial activation of the reticular activating system and cortical arousal, fragmenting sleep architecture. The brain doesn't achieve sufficient time in slow-wave sleep (crucial for physical restoration and memory consolidation) or REM sleep (essential for emotional regulation and learning). The hypothalamus's sleep-wake switch becomes unstable, flip-flopping between states. Stress hormones may surge during awakenings, making it difficult to return to sleep.
